Agriculture Alert: 30% Work Concession for MGNREGA Laborers in Kalyana Karnataka
1. The Response to "Extreme Heat" Demands
Following widespread protests by labor unions and workers across Bidar, Kalaburagi, Yadgir, and Raichur, the Karnataka state government has officially sanctioned a significant relief measure for rural laborers. Workers under the Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Act (MGNREGA) had been demanding a reduction in mandatory work hours as temperatures in the region frequently crossed 42°C in early April.
2. Key Policy Changes (April & May 2026)
The government has issued a special directive to protect workers from heatstroke and exhaustion:
30% Work Concession: Laborers in the Kalaburagi and Belagavi divisions are now granted a 30% reduction in the daily workload (measured in cubic meters of earthwork). Essentially, workers will receive full daily wages even if they complete only 70% of the standard daily task.
Revised Timings: Similar to government offices, MGNREGA work-site timings have been shifted to the early morning. Work now commences at 6:00 AM and must conclude by 11:30 AM to ensure laborers are not exposed to the sun during the peak afternoon hours (12 PM to 4 PM).
Mandatory Facilities: Every worksite is now required to provide "Chappara" (temporary shade), clean drinking water, and first-aid kits containing ORS (Oral Rehydration Salts).
3. Political & Wage Context
This concession comes at a time when the daily wage for MGNREGA workers in Karnataka has been revised to ₹370 per day for the 2026-27 financial year. While the state government has provided this heatwave relief, there remains ongoing political tension regarding the transition from MGNREGA to the new VB-G RAM G scheme, with leaders like Priyank Kharge expressing concern over the long-term stability of rural employment.
